Pores are tiny openings in the skin that function to release perspiration and oil (sebum) to cool and condition the body. With up to half a million pores per square centimetre on the skin’s surface, the excessive or increased flow of sweat and oil can over stretch the elasticity of the pore, resulting in the appearance of multiple enlarged pores. Pores can become so enlarged that they can create unattractive craters.
Increased sebaceous activity produced during puberty stimulates oil flow particularly on the nose, forehead and chin areas (the T-Zone). Whilst these are traditionally the most common areas for enlarged pores, they can occur anywhere on the body on all skin types and conditions.
Other factors that increase the appearance of enlarged pores include:
- Seborrhoea (excessive, thickened oil flow)
- Extractions or squeezing
Enlarged Pores Treatment Solutions
We offer a number of treatments that can help with enlarged pores and the factors that cause them. All treatments are performed by paramedically trained skin clinicians or registered nurses.
Skin Needling is an effective method for the reduction of enlarged pores. By safely penetrating deeply into the underlying layers of skin, Skin Needling kick starts the body’s natural wound healing response, producing and distributing new collagen, plumping up the enlarged pore and making them smaller. Evincy Cosmetic Medical Centre has access to a range of treatment sizes to specifically target various depths and sizes of enlarged pores.
Microdermabrasion assists in the removal of dead and dry skin cells from the surface of the skin which reduces congestion that leads to enlarged pores. It is especially effective for blackheads that are the main culprits of enlarged pores. This technique also stimulates the growth of collagen, which promotes healthy-looking skin.
Chemical Peels provide a suitable option to treat mild to moderate enlarged pores. Containing alpha hydroxyl or beta hydroxyl acids, Chemical Peels effectively remove dead skin and promote “new” skin, reducing the appearance of enlarged pores.
Laser therapy is a medical grade cold laser that promotes rapid skin repair and renewal without heat or discomfort. Emitting a gentle beam to the enlarged pore affected areas, Laser therapy works within the skin to naturally stimulate a healing response which promotes cellular renewal and collagen synthesis. This re-models and repairs uneven texture, indentations and stretched tissues. Laser therapy provides a suitable option to treat old and excessively stretched pores.
- A glycolic acid based cleanser can effectively remove excess oil and dead skin cells, reducing the causes of enlarged pores.
- Exfoliation reduces the accumulation of dead skin cells which can lead to blocked and enlarged pores, decongesting and clarifying the skin.
- Daily use of a sunscreen is vital when receiving Microdermabrasion or Chemical Peel treatment to reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and retinoid reaction.
