What is Laser Skin Tightening?
No one is immune to the effects of time. As we age, the effects of time begin to appear on our skin in the forms of wrinkles, folds, and creases, not to mention looseness and sagging. There’s no way to keep it from happening, but you can drastically slow it down and fight it. One way to do that is with laser skin tightening.
The procedure is exactly what its name sounds like—tightening aging, wrinkled and sagging skin with laser treatments. It’s not as daunting as it may sound. The device used to perform laser skin tightening is very gentle, and provides numerous benefits without further damaging or injuring the skin. You’ll look younger, feel better, and no one else will be the wiser.
Laser Skin Tightening Benefits
Two of the biggest benefits of laser skin tightening are that it doesn’t require any incisions, which means recovery time is also shortened, and it’s a low-cost way to fight the signs of aging, particularly when compared to surgical options such as a facelift.
But laser skin tightening offers many more benefits as well. After a series of sessions—the number of which will be recommended by your doctor and dependent on your skin’s current condition and the results you’re trying to achieve—you’ll see changes including, but not limited to:
- smoothed out wrinkles
- improved skin elasticity
- improved skin suppleness
- rejuvenated complexion
- diminished jowls (to a certain extent; more severe cases may benefit from face liposuction)
In addition to minimizing the signs of aging on your face, laser skin tightening can do the same for other areas of your body, such as your neck and chest. Ask about your options when you come in for your free consultation.
How is Laser Skin Tightening Performed?
First, you’ll need to schedule a free consultation so our patient consultant can listen to your concerns, and make appropriate recommendations for you. Then, our professional aesthetician will talk with you, examine your skin, and take some “before” photos so you’ll be able to see your skin’s improvement over time.
Before beginning your laser skin tightening session, your aesthetician will thoroughly cleanse your skin, and help you put on safety goggles to protect your eyes from the laser.
We perform laser skin tightening with the non-ablative Nd:YAG laser. It achieves results without wounding or damaging the skin. To further protect your skin, we attach a special cooling device to the laser, which protects your skin from the heat produced by the pulsing light. During the procedure, you may experience a feeling of warmth in the area being treated, but our patients report it’s very tolerable, and not painful.
The laser works by stimulating the tissues to promote circulation, and activate the skin’s own restorative functions. It also creates a skin-resurfacing effect to diminish wrinkles, while also stimulating deeper tissues to encourage collagen regeneration.
After your laser skin tightening treatment, you may feel some residual warmth or tingling in your skin, which is completely normal, and a sign that the treatment is working. These sensations should subside within 24 hours, depending on the sensitivity of your skin.
To achieve optimal results, we recommend you undergo multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart. This will give your body time to generate fresh, new skin tissue that is tighter and firmer. Because this is naturally a gradual process, it may take a few sessions over several weeks to achieve noticeable results.
Laser Skin Tightening Recovery
Because it’s non-invasive and gentle on your skin, laser skin tightening requires minimal downtime for recovery. You should be able to return to your regular daily activities immediately following your treatment. You may see some minor redness for about a day afterward, but most patients report it goes away within just an hour or so after treatment.
To assist with recovery, and allow your skin to regenerate as quickly as possible, we recommend you avoid strenuous activities that will cause you to perspire (such as working out), for at least 24 hours after your treatment. You should also avoid swimming and hot tubs.
Above all, be sure to wear a minimum SPF 30 sunblock to protect your skin while it heals, and to help prevent further sun damage.
When will I see results?
Because the effects of laser skin tightening are cumulative after each treatment, it may take some time before you see noticeable results. Final results may take up to six months to appear after your last treatment.
How many laser skin tightening sessions will I need?
The number of sessions is based on the area to be treated, and your skin’s pre-treatment condition. Most patients need a minimum of six sessions for optimal results. Your aesthetician will be able to give you a more definitive idea of what will be best for you.
Are there any alternative treatments?
Yes! We offer other non-surgical skin treatments such as fractional laser resurfacing, dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections. Each can help improve the skin’s appearance in different ways. If you prefer to pursue a surgical option, ask us about our facelift procedure.
Is laser skin tightening painful?
No. Our laser skin tightening patients report a warm feeling, following by tingling that is not painful. If you have sensitive skin, the treatment may make your skin feel a bit more sensitive than usual, but a cold compress should help reduce any discomfort.
How tight can laser skin tightening make my skin?
It’s important to remember that laser skin tightening is meant to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and minimal looseness and sagging. It cannot do away with excess or stretched skin caused by pregnancy or dramatic weight loss. If this type of excess skin is a concern for you, better options might be a tummy tuck or a panniculectomy Talk to your doctor for more information.
What are the possible laser skin tightening side effects?
You may experience a bit of redness and tingling after the treatment, but this will dissipate after several hours, possibly up to one day.
What are the possible laser skin tightening risks?
Possible risks include, but are not limited to laser burns, scarring or hyperpigmentation. These are more likely to occur when you do not follow your doctor’s pre- and post-treatment instructions, such as not wearing sunscreen to protect your skin.
